Inside the Museum
This program is a guided tour of The Army Museum conducted by a presenter in a historic Canadian Army uniform. The tour features exhibit spaces spanning the life of a soldier in the First and Second World Wars, The Halifax Explosion, Women’s role in the army, life for civilians on the home front, as well as artifacts used by soldiers that students will be able to handle to bring them closer to the personal side of the history. This program’s grade range is grades 5 through high school. The cost is $5.00 per student with teachers and chaperones free. Contact our Education Coordinator here.
School Visit
This program involves a presenter coming to the classroom in a historic uniform with artifacts used by Canadian soldiers from the First and Second World Wars. The topic of the presentation is all about what a Canadian soldier’s life was like in the First and Second World War. This is a hands-on presentation where students will get to handle the artifacts that are brought in to allow a far deeper connection to be made with the history of the item. The grade range for this program is grades 5 through High School with the topics of the presentation reflecting on the age of the audience. This program is offered for for a nominal fee to any school in the HRCE.
Education Box
This program is a hands on presentation similar to a school visit, but for schools that are out of reach of The Army Museum to send a presenter. This program allows teachers to run the presentation themselves with all the necessary components included. From the artifacts, student worksheets, deeper explanations of the program and artifacts for the teacher, everything needed to conduct a presentation is included in this kit box. These kit boxes are placed across Nova Scotia in other museums or libraries and can be picked up at these spots rather than Halifax. This programs grade range is grades 4 through high school. This program is free to any School in Nova Scotia.
Letter Project
The Letter Project is an in-depth, downloadable research project for high school classes. It consists of a series of letters written by Canadian soldiers during 19th- and 20th-century conflicts. Students will select, read, analyze, and write a research paper on one of these letters. This open-ended research project is designed to familiarize students with primary sources, appealing to their desire for a personal connection to their work, while simultaneously providing them the opportunity to explore the situations and events occurring at the time the letter was written.
Archival Exploration
The Archival Exploration Project is an in class project conducted with primary sources (photos, cards, and posters). This program is downloadable and comes with a worksheet, a description sheet for teachers, as well as 20 different primary sources related to Canadian soldiers in the First and Second World Wars. This project is designed to introduce students to primary sources, how they can help us understand the lives of people from the past, and learn critical thinking skills. This project is designed for grades 4-8.
